The use of patents to measure innovation is built on a number of research findings. For example, it has been shown that a positive correlation exists between the number of applications for patents and R&D expenditure by industry and by country/region.
Our new research briefing describes the techniques used to measure certain aspects of patenting activity by Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) headquartered in India. These techniques were applied to determine the winners of the Innovation Award 2009, awarded by Thomson Reuters at InfoVision 2009 in Bangalore. The award went to Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd and Sterlite Technologies for their achievements through patented technology.
