Background to this new invention may well be found in a handful of published PCT applications in the name of Proximagen Neurosciences… Veritron has filed a new UK initial application detailing therapeutic uses of plant extracts… A0 applications filed May 15th – May 21st 2008 Week 0825 The UK Patents Journal (No. 6213) this week reports the grant of a Supplementary Protection Certificate to Pharmacia and Upjohn on EP0758327 for tipranavir… On March 28, 2008 we reported that Eli Lilly had filed two identical SPCs, SPC/ GB08/016 and 017 for Pfizer's Eraxis (anidulafungin)… Not yet reported in the Patents Journal is a series of six SPC applications filed jointly by Aventis Holdings (sanofiaventis) and Yeda R&D… Vitra Pharmaceuticals Ltd is seeking patent protection for therapeutic compositions (GB0808835)… A0 applications filed May 8th – May 15th 2008 Week 0824 The UK Patent Journal (No 6212) this week reports the filing of a Supplementary Protection Certificate (SPC) application by Merck & Co., Inc for AIDS combination Atripla… The filing of two SPC applications by Novartis for the Eucreas combination of vildagliptin + metformin on EP1741446 and EP1137635 is also reported… In another announcement, the Patents Journal reports the entry into force of an SPC on EP0299602 for GSK’s ropinirole… Last year we reported that Merck & Co had filed an SPC application on EP1412357 for Januvia… Replidyne Inc has filed an initial UK application with claims to novel structures… A0 applications ﬁled May 5th – May 11th 2008 Week 0823 Novartis has been in the news again this week with the announcement that it is to acquire US biotech company Protez Pharmaceuticals… The only SPC announcement in this week’s UK Patents Journal (No. 6211) relates to Merck & Co Inc’s application based on EP0748320 covering fosaprepitant… Wyeth has filed an SPC application on EP0763039 to protect temsirolimus… GSK has filed a new SPC application covering fluticasone furcate (sic) on EP1305329,… A0 applications filed April 28th – May 4th 2008 Week 0822 Only one event relating to Supplementary Protection Certificates (SPCs) was reported in this week’s UK Patents Journal (No. 6210), the entry into force of the SPC granted to Amersham Health Salutar on EP0290047 for mangafodipir… Although not yet published in the Patent Journal by the UK IPO, Merck & Co., Inc has filed applications for two SPCs in May. The first of these covers fosaprepitant… The second new SPC filing by Merck & Co., Inc relates to the newly approved Atripla combination of efavirenz, emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate… Novartis has also filed two new SPC applications, although these consecutive applications cover the same combination product, Eucreas… A0 applications filed April 21st – April 27th 2008 Week 0821 Arriva Pharmaceuticals Inc issued a press release on 21 May 2008 reporting the grant of a US patent in the context of its investigational asthma therapy know as SLAPI… UK Daily news coverage this week (21 May 2008) gave prominence to work being carried out at INSERM and Université Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris… Acacia Pharma has filed a UK initial application to protect a new therapeutic use (GB0807931)… Rosemont Pharmaceuticals has filed a UK initial application (GB0807068) relating to rosiglitazone solutions… A0 applications filed April 14th – April 20th 2008 Week 0820 In this week’s UK Patents Journal (No. 6208) only one event is recorded concerning Supplementary Protection Certificates (SPCs), the granting of Takeda’s application… As we enter the annual hayfever season in the UK, there were reports in the UK news of a “new” breakthrough in the treatment of hayfever (allergic rhinitis). Several newspapers and the Reuters… Glaxo Group is seeking protection for an anhydrous crystal form of orvepitant maleate… Alchemy Healthcare has filed GB0806735 claiming a particulate dispenser. The Oxford-based company… A0 applications ﬁled April 7th – April 13th 2008 Week 0819 The UK Patents Journal (No 6207) this week reports the filing of two Supplementary Protection Certificate (SPC) applications. The first of these was filed by the Massachusetts General Hospital Corp… The second reported filing (first reported by us two weeks ago) was lodged by Merck subsidiary… Two SPCs have also been granted recently by the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO). The first was awarded to Shire Pharmaceuticals… The second granted SPC was awarded to Bayer Pharmaceuticals Corp… The UK Patent Journal also reports the entry into force on April 14, 2008 of an SPC on EP0287951 awarded to Otsuka Pharmaceutical for grepafloxacin… AstraZeneca (AZ) reported on May 6, 2008 that the European Patent Office had revoked EP1014993, one of a number of patents protecting its Symbicort combination product… A0 applications filed March 31st – April 6th 2008 Week 0818 The UK Patents Journal (No. 6206) this week contains a correction to an entry published in last week’s Journal, which reported the expiry of the SPC covering Merck & Co's alendronate (Fosamax)… The Patents Journal also contains notice that an SPC (GB06/010) has been granted to Les Laboratories Servier for ivabradine on EP0534859… Meanwhile good news for Pfizer in Japan, as the company has gained its first patent extension for celecoxib (Celebrex)… Taiho and Otsuka Pharmacuetical received further granted patent extensions for their TS-1 Capsule, which is a combination of tegafur, gimeracil and oteracil potassium… A0 applications filed March 24th – March 30th 2008 Week 0817 The UK Patents Journal (No 6205) this week records the lodging of SPC/GB08/018 by Vertex for fosamprenavir, which is marketed as Lexiva and Telzir… Also reported in the Journal is the grant of two Plant Protection SPCs in the UK to E.I. Du Pont de Nemours (Dupont)… At the opposite end of the SPC lifecycle, we also have the expiry of two SPCs reported in the Journal. The Hospital has filed for an SPC for nitric oxide on EP0786264… The Icelandic Patent Office has also been busy with SPCs, publishing details of four grants, two human and two veterinary… A0 applications filed March 10th – March 16th 2008 Week 0815 National news headlines this week have featured two prominent drug discovery stories that have interesting intellectual property aspects… Breaking news on Friday 11 April included early reports of a promising trial of the use of etanercept to improve brain function in Alzheimer’s disease (AD)… The latest issue of the UK Patents Journal (No. 6203) records the entry into force on Allergan’s EP284288 of the SPC protecting tazarotene… A0 applications filed March 3rd – March 9th 2008 Week 0814 This week see the first week of publication of the new webbased UK Patents Journal as scheduled… Not yet reported in either the PDJ or the new Patents Journal is the SPC application by Vertex Pharmaceuticals, filed by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), for fosamprenavir calcium… GSK has also been in the news this week because of two Court hearings. The first of these saw the publication of the UK Court of Appeal judgement regarding the revocation of Genentech and Biogen Idec’s EP1176981… The second court case in which GSK was involved was the case heard at the District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, which aimed to prevent the USPTO from implementing its proposed new rules governing the examination of patents… A0 applications filed February 25th – March 2nd 2008 Week 0813 On March 1, 2008 Novartis Ag’s SPC for rivastigmine came into force on GB2203040 and will expire in just over four years time on July 30, 2012... Also reported in this week’s PDJ is the entry into force on March 4, 2008 of the SPC granted to BTG International... Not yet reported in the PDJ is the SPC application filed in the UK by Spanish company, J. Uriach & CIA for rupatadine... As mentioned earlier, this week sees the last issue of the UK PDJ as the UKIPO will be implementing a new service on 2nd April 2008, to replace the current Journal... A0 applications filed February 8th – February 24th 2008 Week 0812 The current issue of the UK Patents and Designs Journal (PDJ No. 6200) contains details of the entry into force of three Supplementary Protection Certificates, including Bayer’s Plant Protection SPC covering spiroxamine... The PDJ also reports the entry into force of Lilly’s SPC for duloxetine on EP0273658... Lilly has also been apparently involved in filing two UK SPC applications for Pfizer’s anidulafungin... Pfizer has also been active in filing an SPC on EP1284974 for maraviroc... A0 applications filed February 10th – February 17th 2008 Week 0811 The UK Patents and Designs Journal (PDJ No. 6199) this week reports four events relating to EC regulations 1768/92 and 1610/96... Also reported is the entry into force on February 16, 2008 of the SPC granted to Sanofi-Aventis for clopidogrel hydrogen sulphate (Plavix)... The final event reported is a declaration of invalidity of the SPC granted to Ancare Distributors for ivermectin + praziquantel (Equimax)... Although not yet reported in the PDJ, more SPC applications have been filed at the UKIPO and can be seen through the UKIPO’s SPC database. The first, SPC/GB08/011, has been filed by the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation... Pharma Mar (a subsidiary of Zeltia), has filed what is believed to be its first UK SPC application on February 28. Under license from the University of Illinois, Pharma Mar has developed and launched trabectedin... A0 applications filed February 4th – February 10th 2008 Week 0810 The UK Patents and Designs Journal (PDJ No. 6198) does not contain any Supplementary Protection Certificate events this week. However, several special Notices are of interest... Amongst these, two 5 year extensions have been granted on JP06062623 for valaciclovir HCl (Valtrex), used in suppression of genital herpes... A further extension of four years and three months has been granted on JP2851480 for the use of lamivudine... Five year extensions have also been granted to Kirin-Amgen for darbepoetin alfa (Aranesp), a closely related recombinant form of erythropoietin,... A0 applications filed January 28th – February 3rd 2008 Week 0809 The UK Patents and Designs Journal (PDJ No. 6197) this week reports the filing of three Supplementary Protection Certificate (SPC) applications… Also reported in this week’s PDJ is the entry into force of the SPC granted to Syntex (USA) LLC (now Roche Bioscience) for ganirelix (Orgalutran)… In the US, it was reported on February 14 that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in a federal lawsuit had accused biotechnology company Cephalon Inc of buying off possible generic competition to its sleep disorder treatment Provigil (modafinil)… A0 applications ﬁled January 21st – January 27th 2008 Week 0808 The UK Patents and Designs Journal (PDJ No. 6196) contains details of only one event concerning Supplementary Protection Certificates (SPCs) this week, the granting of a Plant Protection SPC to Nippon Soda for acetamiprid… The first of these was filed in the name of Amgen Fremont Inc on EP0979246 and aims to further protect panitumumab… The second new SPC application was filed by GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals (GSK)… On February 15, the Icelandic Patent Gazette reported four SPCs filed in 2007 between March and September. Two of these were for veterinary products, Pfizers’ maropitant and Merck Frosst Canada’s firocoxib… Innovata Biomed filed two new applications describing improvements relating to inhalers… Endocrine Pharmaceuticals has filed two new UK initial applications claiming peptides and their uses… A0 applications ﬁled January 7th – January 13th 2008 Week 0807 The UK Patents and Designs Journal (PDJ 6195) this week reports the expiry of two SPCs. Shell’s Plant Protection SPC for the antifungal combination of dimethomorph + mancozeb,… Not yet reported in the PDJ is the SPC application by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) for nelarabine… Also filing for further protection was Pfizer which submitted an application on January 16, in the names of Sugen and Pharmacia & Upjohn… Novartis is the third company which has filed an SPC application in January that has not yet been published in the PDJ. This application was filed on EP1137635 for vildagliptin (Galvus)… A0 applications filed December 24th – January 2nd 2007 Week 0806 The UK Patents and Designs Journal (PDJ No. 6194) this week reports the expiry of the SPC granted to Sanofi-Synthelabo (now sanofi-aventis) for fondaparinux sodium… Novartis was granted two extensions of two years, one month and 17 days on JP2653958 for the use of cyclosporine in treating generalised myasthenia gravis… Eisai received five year extensions on JP1953321 and JP2010529 for rabeprazole sodium... The final two extensions were granted to GSK and partner Shire Biochem and cover lamivudine… A0 applications ﬁled December 24th – January 2nd 2007 Week 0805 The UK Patents and Designs Journal (PDJ 6193) this week reports the filing of the first five SPC applications of 2008… Also announced this week, was the deposit on January 29 by France of its instrument of ratification for the London Agreement, which will now enter into force on May 1, 2008… BTG International has filed an initial application disclosing a treatment of neurodegenerative conditions… ProCure Therapeutics is applying for patent protection (GB0724569) for cancer stem cell markers… Psynova Neurotech is seeking patent protection for methods and biomarkers for diagnosing and monitoring psychotic disorders (GB0724735)… Asterion has lodged two new applications claiming prolactin antagonists (GB0724654) and agonists (GB0724656)… A0 applications filed December 17th - December 23rd 2007 Week 0804 The UK Patents and Designs Journal (PDJ 6192) does not contain any events relating to Supplementary Protection Certificates (SPCs)… The Massachusetts General Hospital Corp (MGH) has also applied for an SPC for nitric oxide (NO) used in the treatment of pulmonary hypertension in newborn infants… Roche has applied for an SPC on EP1064951 to protect methoxypolyethyleneglycolated epoetin beta… Domantis has a new application (GB0724331) claiming compositions for pulmonary delivery… Renovo has filed multiple UK applications covering methods for inhibiting scarring (GB0724203, GB0724204 and GB0724237)… A0 applications filed December 10th - December 16th 2007… Week 0803 7TM Pharma is claiming cannabinoid receptor modulators in GB0724096… Lectus Therapeutics has filed (GB0723794) in order to protect potassium ion channel modulators and their use… Apitope Technology has lodged a new application (GB0723712) with the UK intellectual property office entitled peptides… Dr David Cavalla is seeking protection for a treatment of cachexia in a new UK initial application (GB0723757)… A0 applications filed December 3rd - December 9th 2007 Week 0802 The UK Patents and Designs Journal (PDJ No. 6190) this week published details of the remaining 2007 applications for SPCs lodged in the UK… Also reported in this weeks PDJ is the entry into force of the SPC on EP0281713 protecting Roche’s mycophenolate mofetil (MMF)… Also reported as entering into force recently is Yale University’s SPC on EP0273277 protecting Stavudine… Although not yet reported in the PDJ, a further five SPC applications were filed in 2007, according to the UKIPO web database.
