Track the impact of your institution's researchers and your journal usage

Thomson Scientific
Do publisher usage reports provide you with the complete picture of how journals are being used at your library? Does a journal’s impact factor tell you the impact of that journal at your institution? Where are your researchers publishing, and which journals are they citing? Thomson Scientific is working on a tool to answer these and other questions, providing you with a complete picture of journal utilization at your institution.
A complete picture of journal utilization at your institution
Thomson Scientific has set the standard for journal utilization metrics
worldwide. In addition to the prestigious Journal Citation Reports® and
Essential Science IndicatorsSM, Thomson Scientific offers custom journal analyses
from our Research Services Group, which provides such tools as the Local Journal
Utilization Reports and Journal Performance Indicators.
Now, based on feedback from librarians around the world, Thomson Scientific is developing a new tool to arm librarians with more journal utilization data than has ever been gathered in one place before.
A 360º snapshot
Working with top institutions worldwide — Dartmouth College,
University of Chicago, University of Michigan, Drexel University and University
of Melbourne — Thomson Scientific is currently developing a new tool which
will provide you with a 360º snapshot of
the utilization of all the journals and serials in, and out of, your collection.
Currently envisioned as an add-on to Journal Citation Reports on the Web, this
unique tool will harness the power and depth of Thomson Scientific citation
information, and combine it with skilful programming to provide you with customized
journal utilization data that you cannot find anywhere else, including:
- The number of times a journal has been accessed by users in your institution (its impact at your institution)
- Which journals your institution’s researchers have published in, and how many times (both inside and outside of your collection)
- Which journals your institution’s researchers cited, which journals cite them, and the number of times
Usage data supplemented with citation information
Working together with your institution, Thomson Scientific will help
you gather all of your institution’s journal usage data into a concise
format. We will then supplement that usage data with citation information from
the already-indexed Thomson Scientific database. This provides you with a complete
picture of how journals and serials are being used at your institution, as well
as the intellectual contributions your institution’s researchers are making
with their publishing and citation records in the scholarly literature.
When adding in linking/downloading capabilities to your library’s ERM (Electronic Resource Management) suite, the new Thomson Scientific 360º utilization tool will be the critical resource to utilize to manage your collection, with more information at your fingertips than ever before.
More news on this exciting development will be coming from Thomson Scientific during 2005.
