Introducing EndNote Web: interview with David Kochalko
Thomson Scientific
September 2006
EndNote® Web is the new Web-based bibliographic service for students and researchers that organizes personal reference collections and saves time retyping references for course work and publication. Nancy Matus interviewed David Kochalko to find out more about how this new solution can be put to work.
How does EndNote Web work?
EndNote Web searches ISI Web of KnowledgeSM, PubMed® and hundreds of online library catalogs and imports references, complete with abstracts, so users can type as little as a search strategy or edit the references with personal notes and keywords.
The addition of EndNote Web helps undergraduate students organize their references for citing in papers. For the professional researcher and graduate student who depend on EndNote and other desktop writing tools, EndNote Web is the perfect complement for storing references. Now the millions of EndNote users who demand a robust desktop writing tool with a higher degree of accessibility and control can be even more productive using the combination of EndNote and EndNote Web.
How is EndNote Web being integrated with ISI Web of Knowledge and EndNote ?
EndNote Web will be introduced as a new personalization option within ISI Web of Knowledge. In essence, EndNote Web becomes the new way to mark references from multiple searches with the advantage of storing references beyond a single ISI Web of Knowledge session. When users are ready to download references to their desktop version of EndNote, a simple transfer feature moves the EndNote Web references seamlessly. This new integration reduces numerous steps to just one.
References stored in EndNote Web include links to ISI Web of Knowledge, so users can watch the "times cited" information update automatically and return to the source record in one click. These references will be marked in ISI Web of Knowledge to indicate that they have been captured. Together, these tools create a true bibliographic solution for the research community.
How will EndNote users take advantage of EndNote Web?
Desktop EndNote users will find EndNote Web a great way to collaborate, maximizing the expertise each researcher brings to a project. Using EndNote Web, researchers can share specific folders with designated colleagues or students. A shared folder can be viewed by others with an EndNote Web account. EndNote on the desktop remains the powerhouse favored by researchers who publish frequently, write citation-intensive works and require the performance available only from a desktop tool.
EndNote users can select EndNote or EndNote Web for citing references in a paper. Cite While You Write™ works the same whether you are citing references from your desktop or Web library.
When will EndNote Web be available?
EndNote Web will be available to academic and government subscribers of ISI Web of Knowledge and EndNote sitewide licensees later this year. ISI Web of Knowledge users will have immediate access to EndNote Web via the personalization options. Users will also be able to access EndNote Web at www.myendnoteweb.com (active later this year) to login to their personal account which will be accessible from any location, on and off campus.
How will students and researchers learn to use EndNote Web ?
EndNote Web's intuitive interface gets users up to speed quickly. An online Getting Started Guide comes with the program, and Thomson ResearchSoft will provide online tutorials with 24/7 access to assist users getting started.
Why are common solutions on the desktop and Web important?
The desktop and Web each offer benefits to users. Having both solutions allows for sharing and collaboration and lower training requirements. This gives users the best of both worlds — a Web solution for mobile and occasional users and a robust desktop solution for researchers and authors.
