Lifetime Achievement Award for Dr Eugene Garfield

February 2007

Dr Eugene Garfield, founder and Chairman Emeritus of ISI® (now part of Thomson Scientific), received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the International Information Industry Awards in London, UK in December 2006. The award recognized Dr Garfield's pioneering work in citation indexing of scientific research papers. His citation databases are now part of ISI Web of KnowledgeSM, used by millions worldwide for research in the sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities.

Dr Garfield traveled to London to collect his award in person. The ceremony took place during the week of the Online Information international exhibition and conference, where Thomson Scientific hosted a champagne reception at its exhibition stand to celebrate Dr Garfield's achievement. Both at the stand and the award ceremony Dr Garfield was approached by many information professionals keen to inform him of his influence on their work, or to grab the chance for a photograph with a pioneer in their field.

The road to this award began over fifty years ago when Eugene Garfield published his groundbreaking paper on citation indexing, "Citation Indexes for Science: A New Dimension in Documentation through Association of Ideas." This innovative paper envisioned information tools that enabled researchers to evaluate the impact of their work, spot scientific trends, and trace the history of modern scientific thoughts — tools that became a reality with the launch of the Science Citation Index almost ten years later. With the subsequent development of additional indexes, their launch on the internet as part of Web of Science, and integration with additional databases, search and analysis tools within ISI Web of Knowledge, Dr Garfield's vision is now reaching its full potential.

During his time in London, Dr Garfield was also interviewed by Information Today's Barbara Brynko. This interview, published in the January 2007 issue of the magazine, portrays an information scientist still very much dedicated to his field — and still referring daily to ISI Web of Knowledge.

Celebrations for Thomson Scientific continue in 2007 with the 10th anniversary of Web of Science, which now brings researchers over 100 years of citation data from over 230 disciplines.
