National Science Indicators

Overview

National Science Indicators is an easy-to-use statistical database of national research performance measures in the sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities. The most up-to-date statistics from over 180 nations and four regions (Asia Pacific, Asia Pacific excluding Japan, the European Union, and Latin America) allow you to measure a nation's publication output and citation impact.

Based on unique and authoritative publication and citation statistics from Thomson Scientific, National Science Indicators provides over 25 years of valuable analytical data for policymakers and research analysts, offices of science and technology, ministries of research and education, councils of rectors, and non-governmental organizations.

Conduct internal and peer comparisons - measure output, influence, and impact; establish baselines.

With National Science Indicators, you can:

  • Make strategic budget decisions - Which research areas within your nation are showing an increase or decrease in publication output and impact? How does the overall performance of one country or region -- and the performance of specific research fields within those areas --  compare with others?
  • Identify strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities -- Discover your areas of specialization, and use country and field baselines to see how other countries' research performance compares.
  • Track other nations' progress - -Gather the competitive intelligence information you need for accurate benchmarking against peer countries.

Why choose National Science Indicators?

  • For each university, you'll receive total number of papers, total citations to papers, average cites per paper, and field and country baselines.
  • Choose a time period to analyze - Analyze the data for each year, for the entire period, for the most recent five-year period, or in five-year moving windows of papers published and cited for one or any group of countries.
  • Choose fields to analyze - Examine performance overall or in one or more of 24 broad subfields in the sciences and social sciences (Standard Version) or 106 narrower fields in the sciences, social sciences, and humanities (Deluxe Version).
  • Compare actual and relative performance - Built-in baseline statistics help you compare national and regional performance against the average for each discipline.
  • Visualize data by easily creating tables, charts and graphs.
